The Jale Family Maritime Story: From Ayvalık to the Aegean
The roots of Uğur Jale Lines go back to 1923, a time when land transport in Turkey was still undeveloped. Eşref Jale, descendant of a seafaring family, settled in Ayvalık — one of the era's most important Aegean trade centers — and began maritime transport operations. In those years, the port of Ayvalık served as the commercial lifeline of the Aegean region.
Eşref Jale pioneered the shipping of Ayvalık's essential goods by sea, carrying olives, olive oil, olive pomace, timber and millstones from Ayvalık to major Turkish port cities such as İzmir, İstanbul, Antalya, Mersin and Trabzon. Today, our company operating Ayvalık – Lesvos ferry services is the fourth-generation representative of this long maritime tradition.
Seafaring Across Generations
Eşref Jale
Coming from a seafaring family, Eşref Jale settled in Ayvalık — one of the Aegean's most important trade centers — in 1923 and began maritime transport. He pioneered the shipping of olives, olive oil and timber from Ayvalık to İzmir, İstanbul, Antalya and Trabzon.
Ali Jale
Following in his father's footsteps, Ali Jale expanded Ayvalık's commercial maritime fleet and founded one of the region's most trusted shipping firms. He strengthened the family's maritime legacy by operating cargo and passenger transport along the Aegean coast for many years.
Engin Jale
Engin Jale, who became a ship's captain after maritime training from a young age, held important positions in the commercial fleet. He returned to Ayvalık in 1984 to take over the family business, transforming the company into one of the Aegean region's most trusted brands in tourism and maritime transport.
Uğur Jale
Deep-sea captain Uğur Jale brought the family tradition to a new level with the maritime training and international experience he gained abroad. The company he founded, Uğur Jale Lines, now operates ferry services between Ayvalık and Lesvos, forming an important maritime transport and tourism bridge between Turkey and Greece.
